J-corps, Jr. Students blue line

Age: between 15 but not more than 18 and 6 months at the time of enrollment in the host school

Previous Program Participation: The student has not previously participated as an exchange visitor for high school studies in the U.S.

Academic Standing:

  • has sufficient English language ability (minimum SLEP score of 40 or TOEFL score of 380)
  • has sufficient academic standing (minimum 3.0 out of a 5.0; with English grade of a minimum 3.5 and no grades lower than 2.0 in core subjects of Math, English, Japanese, Science and Social Studies from Junior High School to present)
  • interview (of both student applicant and parent/guardian) and testing conducted by program administrators
  • total number of school absences in one academic year can be no more than 8 days/year
 

 

Personal Characteristics to be evaluated during the interview and gleaned from application materials: 

  • has an interest in helping American students learn about Japan and Japanese
  • has ability to follow directions given by Japanese language teacher
  • demonstrates appropriate maturity level
  • demonstrates good judgment/common sense (recognized by peers, teachers)
  • demonstrates ability to communicate his or her feelings, questions, comments with an appropriate level of clarity and respect
  • is flexible — adjusts to changes in environment/conditions of activities
  • is outgoing and active
  • has some skill or ability to show/discuss in more detail Japanese arts, sports, contemporary culture 
  • is mentally and physically able to participate fully
